FAMOUS: How Indra is Driving the Future of European Armoured Vehicles

The goal is to design and develop a new generation of armoured vehicles that are more agile, modular, and interoperable

Why was FAMOUS created? European defence is undergoing an unprecedented transformation. In an increasingly complex global context, the European Union has committed to strengthening its strategic autonomy through the European Defence Fund (EDF).

From this initiative comes FAMOUS, a key programme for developing the armoured platforms of the future. At the heart of this technological revolution are Europe’s leading defence champions, with Indra standing out for spearheading the evolution of C4I systems and vehicle digitalisation.

What is FAMOUS and why is it so relevant?

FAMOUS (stands for Future Highly Mobile Augmented Armoured Systems) is a collaborative programme bringing together companies and technology centres from across Europe. Its aim is to design and develop a new generation of armoured vehicles that are more agile, modular, and interoperable.

The programme is structured into three phases:

  • Phase 1 (Dec 2021 – Nov 2023): Definition of requirements and platform-agnostic architecture.
  • Phase 2 (Dec 2022 – Nov 2026): Development, integration, and validation of technologies.
  • Phase 3 (from Dec 2026): Delivery of certified vehicles equipped with fully developed systems, ready for operation.

These vehicles and their systems will be candidates for production on demand within the framework of joint European acquisitions.

Indra’s Role: European Technology Leadership

Indra plays a strategic role in FAMOUS as a member of the executive committee and leader in the development of C4I systems (Command, Control, Communications, Computers & Intelligence). In addition, it is also the main supplier of radar for the Active Protection System (APS), an essential technology for survival on the modern battlefield.

This leadership is backed by Indra’s extensive experience in embedded command and control systems, such as those developed for the Leopard 2E, Pizarro, and VCR 8x8 armoured vehicles, as well as its ability to integrate advanced sensors and cyberdefence solutions.

Three Key Solutions That Make the Difference

Regarding this, Indra is responsible for three decisive solutions for this type of vehicle:

  • Mission System: Acts as the vehicle’s nerve centre, connecting all subsystems and ensuring they operate as a single unit. Its modular, scalable design allows each platform to evolve easily, integrating new capabilities without complex redesigns. Its robust architecture guarantees operability even under extreme conditions.
  • Battlefield Management System (BMS): Indra’s BMS turns information into tactical advantage. Designed to deliver total situational awareness, it enables crews to make fast, accurate decisions. Its lightweight, efficient architecture minimises resource consumption, while compatibility with international standards ensures seamless interoperability with other platforms and allies. It also incorporates advanced cyberdefence capabilities and post-mission analysis tools that multiply its operational value.
  • Radar for APS: Indra’s radar for Active Protection Systems provides full environmental coverage and instant threat detection. Its compact, low-consumption design facilitates integration into all types of vehicles, from light to heavy. Thanks to its digital, modular architecture, this radar not only detects but anticipates and reacts to attacks, acting as an intelligent shield that protects troops in real time. Best of all, it is ready to scale across entire fleets, optimising costs and maintenance.

Beyond FAMOUS: A Continuous Commitment to Innovation

Indra’s leadership extends beyond FAMOUS. It also leads other European programmes such as COMMANDS, MARTE, LATACC, and ACHILE, consolidating its position as a continental benchmark in Command and Control solutions. Furthermore, its radar technology enjoys the backing of strategic partners who trust its reliability and performance.

The project focuses on three main workstreams: an Armoured Troop Transport Vehicle (ATV – All Terrain Vehicle), a Light Armoured Vehicle (LAV), and the modernisation of a Main Battle Tank (MBT) with advanced protection systems and enhanced situational awareness.
